Welcome!

Wells City Archers is a friendly, established club in the heart of rural Somerset with 60 members who shoot for both pleasure and competition. We were established in the mid-1960’s and shoot at Wells Sports Ground in the centre of England’s smallest city. We are fortunate to have our own registered indoor shooting range in addition to an adjacent outdoor range; so we are able to shoot every day of the year, day or night, rain or shine!

Membership
Our outdoor range is permanently open for business subject to the vagaries of the British weather, and has a number of moveable target bosses that can be pegged-down to the full extent of our range. On payment of a small day-membership fee, we also welcome as guest shooters any experienced archers holding an Archery GB membership card (vistors to please email in advance to let us know you are coming and to bring your Archery GB card with you). Our members become key-holders to the indoor range after a qualifying period, and are able to shoot at times that are convenient to them, and use the kitchen and facilities (including WC) contained within.
If you would like to take up archery for the first time we regularly run Beginners’ Courses, where our coaches teach you to shoot safely. Completion of a Beginners’ Course, either with us or with another archery club, is a requirement before joining any archery club. More information on the courses can be found on our Beginners’ page, including the process for registering your interest in taking a course with us. After completion of a Beginners’ Course, you are welcome to attend our coach-led weekly ‘Next Steps’ sessions to take you beyond beginner level and help you to progress with your archery as far as you want to take it!
We also have a thriving Juniors’ section which meets weekly with frequent/Ocasional coaching for youngsters (8-years and older) in archery, with the aim to take them from complete beginner to competent club standard. If you are parent of a child who wants to have a go at archery, please contact us for details of the Juniors’ sessions. Please note that a guardian must accompany all under-18’s whilst they are at the club.
If you would like to know more about the club, and haven’t found the answer on our list of Frequently Asked Questions or by browsing the other pages on our website, please feel free to contact us via email.
Open To All
Anyone over the age of 8 years can apply for membership or take a Beginners’ Course with us, although under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult at all times. If you would like to take a Beginners’ Course and are unsure if you are able to participate due to age, fitness or disability; please feel free to discuss this with one of our coaches at any time. Archery is a very inclusive sport and we’ve found that nearly everyone can participate – age and fitness are no bar to archery (our membership includes kids and senior citizens), and the success of our archery paralympians proves that disability is no impediment to participation in our sport.
We are affiliated to Archery GB (the national organising body), Somerset County Archery Association (SCAA), and the regional Great Western Archery Society (GWAS). We are also part of Archery GB’s club development programme, onTarget, with a Community Specialism within the onTarget programme. In terms of the styles of archery undertaken at our club, our members use a wide range of bows (including Olympic-style recurve bows, longbows, compound bows and more) for target archery during practice sessions and in competitions.
Whatever your style of archery, you’ll find a welcome at Wells City Archers!
